What Are Academic Writing - 887 Words

What is academic writing? That is difficult question due to the fact that there is no sole factor but rather a series of elements that intertwine together that create an academic piece of writing. Throughout my academic experience I would highlight three main elements that are crucial to any piece of academic writing: (1) knowledge of the topic discussed, (2) writing styles, and (3) a clear objective of what conclusions the information gathered has provided. In this paper, I will compare and contrast chapter one of Titchkosky and Michalko’s (2009) Rethinking Normalcy and Applebaum’s (2007) â€Å"White Complicity and Social Justice Education† on the elements, that I believe, categorize these as pieces of academic writing. Chapter one of Rethinking Normalcy discusses the origins of social models on the topic of disabilities and how these social models do not properly address disabilities as medical experts are detrimental to helping people with disabilities because they want to cure these impairments (Titchkosky Michalko, 2009). Applebaum (2007) discuss the idea of white complicity and how models of moral responsibility can help white people, students in particular, to recognize their won white complicity within society as well as what models of moral responsibility can obscure or help inequalities within society.
